I didn't read through all the responses, but Long Beach can be a little rough. I suggest you look into Huntington Beach. Relatively inexpensive for a beach city, more laid back, and you can there are easy side streets to LB to avoid the freeways. Also, HB is situated at the junction of two major freeways (22 and 405); quite convenient.
