I think you need to ask yourself if you are ready to retire. That's what you'll be doing.
Are you trade all of NY and it's surrounding areas for cheaper housing?
Atlanta has some new building but it's devoid of culture, no decent studios, and any sort of payment for services/salary will be 20% lower. If you not central expect to be part the daily traffic jam as well.
California would be an all around better choice. Minus LA.
