Update: the macbook pro arrive today. Unfortunately, it came with a damaged monitor, i.e. some weird scuff marks that seemed to be etched into the LCD. Perhaps these are dead pixels...?
Needless to say, I called Apple immediately and they are sending out a box so I can ship it back to them to be fixed/replaced. Not a big deal, really, although definitely annoying.
