    I'm not entirely sure why your type is acting the way it is... but I'd say: never scale type without increasing the point size. I've had trouble with indesign telling me a font is:

    8pt[12pt]

    and then never getting it to display properly.

    I'd say try creating a postscript file and distilling it. That should resolve a few issues. There are scripts that convert all the type in your ID doc to outlines. I know you're not interested in doing that, but it's as easy as saving an "outlines_test" version and being done with it.
