    there's usually a lot more image information in the dark areas than people think, especially with canon dslr's cmos sensors and even in jpg mode.
    since photoshop CS, there is a great tool called shadows/highlights that can greatly help extend the range of a single image.

    sony ccd sensors are much noisier in those areas and what you pull out of the dark with sony ccd equipped cameras (nikon, minolta, pentax, sony) is sometimes less usable.
