i think it depends on how far you want to stretch your creativity. just fetching data is pretty dull. it's what you do with the data that's makes the work fun.
with xml you can just do much more. the more i work with it, the more i wonder how i worked without it before.
anyway, if you do want to make the best out of what you do, you'll go beyond necessities and add onto that what that creative side yearns.
if half the greatest web sites out there worked just with 'necessary tools', i don't want to know how dull the www would be.but back to the primary issue about it. if you're doing work for a low-budget client with little time, then keep to the basic necessities. if you have a more flexible client or just want to learn it, push yourself.
