you can work without it. i did before picking it up. .. xml is mind boggling to work with in actionscript. but it's a since to output with php.
with xml, you have a LOT more control over your flash, like with movie clips, graphics..etc.
there are some fairly good books out there covering it. one is XML in Flash by Swann and Caines (QUE publishing). also DON'T get the FOE book on it.. the only sample it works with througout the book is a tarrot card app :o
