Best wishes on your impending engagement, btw!

It's important that we also acknowledge the roots of the engagement ring / wedding ring tradition ...

Dominant males of different species mark their territory by doing things like clawing the living hell out of the bark on strategically located trees throughout their range or urinating or defecating near the borders of their range.

Wedding and engagement rings are just the way in which men in our culture tell other men that a particular women is "taken" .... the flashier the ring, presumably, the more afflient/powerful the guy. Notice that men usually don't wear engagement rings and that their wedding rings are usually much smaller and less obtrusive.

Even if the horrible stench of misery and death associated with diamonds didn't dissuade me from going the ring route, the realization that the underlying social purpose of the ring was to mark me as some man's chattel would put me off of the whole scheme.

If you want your man to prove his affection through cash outlays, why not have him buy you a plasma tv or some semi-valuable art object?
