    and of course the way japanese shorten words.
    Pureisute = playstation
    Maku = Mcdonalds
    Sutaba = starbucks

    that is because they cannot pronounce those words, shmartypants! japanese can only say words ending with a vowel.

    i have a friend named joost who is a frequent visitor to japan, and they keep calling him josata..

    Nope. They do it because they simply prefer to shorten words.
    They can say "digital camera" in a japanese way which would be "dijitaru kamera" but coz it's too long they prefer to go with "dijikame", or go for "pasokon" for "personal computer"
    With names it is because of what you said about being able to pronounce them.
