The truth is, even the sexy agencies sometimes have their designers doing crap work. It just depends on what you want. I know someone who is a designer at a really big agency and he spends his day doing flash ad banners for big brands. They might be sexy flash banners but still.
I think you can do crap work or great work anywhere...ok, well, maybe not anywhere.
I think what's most important is the bar you set for yourself as a designer.
