if a company didnt hire you because you overdressed, it is your fault for not letting your personality come thru. if you overdress you can always joke your way out of it. if you underdress, you're fucked, there is no joking out of that without looking unprepared.
my advice to anyone going for a professional job is to wear a suit with no tie. it always works out, they either think "this guy has a great personality and dresses funky" or they think "it wouldnt take much for us to get this guy a shirt and a tie that matches our shit. either way you are gold. If you walk in and everyone is casual, lose the jacket and the shirt tucking. it's pretty easy to do this stuff and you are covered on all fronts.
