Nope - no Japanese required (better for the students, I guess) - You'll just need to pass an internationally- recognized exam (TEFL?) (just to prove you're not a complete linguistic buffoon) and pre-arrange some working options.
A few of my friends've done it (both in Japan and Korea) and have had a great time.
I'm pretty amazed that two of these friends were allowed to teach (never mind enter the country in the first place), so I don't think it's too hard to get into.
