Which leads me in the thinking that usernames/passwords are bogus. Why does anyone need one?
A password perhaps.
But shouldn't your e-mail address be the end all?
Use that are your username?
Or perhaps choose a username, but be able to log in by putting in your e-mail address instead if the site is worried about exclusivity to names?
Passwords could even just be given as session keys in e-mails, and instead of logging in the conventionally way, couldn't you just get an e-mail generated systemitically and click the link thus opening your session key, since you already have an account and putting in a password is useless, as is remembering it.
And until your session closes out, you wouldn't ever have to re-login.
