I was working in a hot cramped studio with several other guys. A friend from the admin office called me in to show me an email he'd just received from a friend in NY who lived near the towers; It's tone was something like "This is crazy, there are people jumping from the towers. Never been so scared in my life." We both thought that maybe his friend was losing the plot. But we couldn't get on any news sites to find out what was going on. That's when my flatmate rang me to tell me to get to a tv. So we switched on the boardroom tv and watched in stunned silence. I remember driving home that night and listening to BBC Radio 4. When the news came on it was surreal to hear the presenter say in his best BBC voice; "Thousands of people have lost their lives in co-ordinated terrorist attacks in the United States..." I felt shocked to hear someone say what we had been dreading.

That night I watched the Mercury Music Prize which was won by PJ Harvey. She was in Washington so accepted the award over the phone. The presenter was trying to congratulate her and all PJ Harvey could talk about was the smoke coming from the Pentagon that she could see from her hotel window.

I was once on the receiving end of terrorism many many years before 911. Nothing like the scale of 911 or 7/7 but I never want to go through it again. Unfortunately there will always be those who want to destroy rather than build so another 911 is a distinct possibility. But just remember that good honest people of all nations, creeds, religions far far outweigh those with evil intentions. By millions.

Peace to all of you and your families.
