ha... i just dropped a client that is doing the same thing. They've been working on a pretty advanced back end to make it automatic from the pdf's. But there presentation layer (the flash page turn part) was the one everyone uses:

But yeah, it's possible to do, buy you'll need to be familiar with some backend language. It will need to process the pdfs, and tell the swf what to do, how many pages, where they are etc.... i don't think its an easy job, but yeah its been/getting done
