get your 250 or 300 or whatever you feel comfortable w/ - learn.
if you can, get him/her to throw in a few prints for you. I bartered a lot in school and now have a house full of some great work.
most importantly, keep track of your hours on the first one - ex: 50 hrs of learning, 20 hrs of actual work - that way you'll bill the next one right.
