I've met more bad AD'S and CD's in my working life than I have met good ones.

The good ones are able to give advice and direction that helps you grow as a designer. They are able to see things in a way that you might not - and are able to help shape things in such a way that you learn through process instead of thinking - 'oh I like green - green will work here'

Well why will it work? Why choose green over brown on that page? Why use helvetica over another typeface?

A good AD can help you understand those things - and can bring cohesion to a team.
