"Plan B should not to be regarded as an abortifacient method. Margaret Blythe, a pediatrician at Indiana University Medical Center, spent 18 months reviewing Plan B, for the support of over the counter use, and said “politicians and the public often don’t distinguish between Plan B and RU-486, a drug that chemically induces abortion in the early weeks of pregnancy”.d Mifepristone (RU-486) inhibits ovulation and implantation.
Levonorgestrel prevents or disrupts ovulation, interfering with fertilization.2 Scientific evidence exists showing levonorgestrel has inhibitory effects on sperm transport to the ovum.4 The main mechanism occurs pre–fertilization. 2,4, The time between the release of sperm and fertilization depends on the availability of the ovum. Fertilization is optimal approximately 6 to 12 hours after ovulation. However, sperm can remain in the female genital tract up to 3 to 5 days after ejaculation. The creation of an embryo or fetus requires implantation. Implantation is not achieved until approximately several days after ovulation. Plan B prevents pregnancy. Abortion terminates pregnancy."
