my mom really started to understand when i compared the type of work i'm doing in NYC to the type of work i'd be doing if i stayed in my home town (ie. business cards for local hardware store or something vs. major websites and magazines, etc..)
Now she can see the difference between "real" graphic design jobs as opposed to a classified ad for a local sign shop or something.
I also like to blow their minds saying how much money corporations pay for a logo.
