I remember going to a lecture by vince frost once and he talked about what his parents thought of him being a designer.
He said he would show them a book he designed and they would respond:
"so did you write this book?"
"no"
"did you take the photos?"
"no"
"so what did you do?"and that's so true, people just don't really understand that pretty much every object on earth is designed by someone. It's just accepted that it exists.
Vince Frost's parents ended up saying "why don't you go back to doing drawings, we liked those"
Luckily my parents seem to understand design pretty well, although my dad's always telling me about so rubbish little print company that a friend of a friend works for – doesn't quite get how big the london scene is.
Stil people understand design a lot more than paleo-oceanography. My sister does that (she's a geologist) so I guess I'm lucky
