agreed with what everyone's saying, but buddy is 19 and judging by his portfolio has some budding creative skills that are probably above whatever the 2 year degree has to offer.
and once you graduate there's all the pressure to jump into the job market and start your career.
i went through design school at teh same age and in retrospect consider it to be too young.
my 2 cents; work a year at the firm, save some coin, and either go travel (butonly if you feel you need to, it ain't all that) or enroll in a more inspiring design program that you can fully immerse yourself in and do the "art school" thing.
i'd recommend Emily Carr if you wanna stay in Vancouver.
