It is indeed without a doubt the grottiest, nastiest lowest drug around...Seems to be a huge problem in the US, but whilst being involved in clubbing and getting spannered every weekend in the uk for 10 years, I'd never heard of it there.. Speed in the UK is amphetamine sulphate - a milder cousin of tweak...in the US its actually sold as Ritalin...Sulphate will make you billy whiz, albeit extrememly annoying to people not on the drug, for days, very cheaply.
Steelcage-on-the-head comedowns, sweats, and bouts of hopeless can ruin the next few days.
Meth seems to be its older, louder brother - supersonic, hyper-mental, thoughts and actions, walk, dance, run at full speed for hours, whilst simulatneously having 3 seperate conversations with 4 different people - you are invincible, lucid, funny - everything you want to be while you're up..Dull, paranoid, aching and sketchy for at least 10 timesas long as you're high. Smoke it wrongly and you'll burn your lungs and be unable to breathe sleep or eat for 3 days..a very miserable time..
Im surprised your colleague still has a job, its so so wickedly morish and its very easy to believe you are controlling part-time use, cause its just so damn good to be up and avoid coming down..
Some people can go for years like that though, with tweak and cocaine, and I wouldnt say anyone knows if they'll handle it like that when they develop a taste for it.
Its a great great high, its a nasty dirty little drug with no psychedlic qualities, no spiritual revelations, and a chain of skanky crooks in dangerous fume-filled trailers that it supports.
