if he really is that much of a prick to work for - you're not going to lose face elsewhere because of him - I say this based on the fact that you said 'past colleagues' have dealt with him.
I find when the 'boss' has aqcuired a bad reputation based on his history of being a 'cock'... moving on to another employer in the same town actually isn't as hard as you might think- because I assure you that other studios 'know his reputation'.
His being a prick for a number of years can actually work to your benefit if it's really as 'bad' as you make it / him out to be.
