  I think it's so that:

  1
  People still can flaunt they have iPods with the distinctive white earphones.

  2
  They produced too many damn white ones and forgot/didn't do black ones so it's white for now.

  Then they remembered/deliberately to make black ones later, so that you spend more money on it.

  4
  People junk them anyway, and Apple buys them back off eBay and throws them white earphones into the black boxes.
