I'd suggest working on the radiosity firts, before moving onto hdri. Radiosity will keep your hands full for a while, esp. with the amount of time involved. hdri are great (although I still havne't found a need/time to do it, not to mention you have to make sure it's even supported without a plugin). You'll get fantastic images without it.
But if someone knows that it's less complicated than setting up regular lights with radiosiy, I am all ears...
