Widescreen all the way. 2 reasons.
1. Photoshop, illustrator type programs need width for palettes so you have room to actually work on a 1024x786 type site., and video editing programs need width for timeline and also palettes.
2. HD - Considering alot of future sites and video will be in widescreen format it is good to have a 16x9 format.
Also, Dell has the 20 inch widescreen right now for 350 or so and the 24s for 700 or so. I have the dell 20 wide screen at home. Love it.
