Personally I'd vote widescreen, as I've got one and wouldn't imagine going back - it just feels a lot more natural. There's likely only a minimal productivity gain and I imagine any gains would favour web/digital design, as you have enough room for a main focus window and other proglets around the side.
However, if you do mainly print work, I think the resolution gain of the 4:3 ratio screen would be more useful and there's a lot of screen wasted when working on portrait print docs (that said, that provides more room for tool palettes, so..)
