Whether in Manhattan or Brooklyn...just make sure you actually live somewhere interesting. Manhattan is not uniformly cooler than Brooklyn. I lived in MorningSide Heights on the edge of Harlem for 3 years while I was in school. When I moved to Brooklyn I fell in love. Consider commute times. If you can only pay Bklyn prices but insist on living in Manhattan you will end up in Washington Heights (about 45 minutes to Union Sq) while if you live in Williamsburg you are literally 10 minutes away. There is also a lot culturally going on in Brooklyn. So don't be afraid!
