I would suggest brooklyn. It is cheaper and is actually a nice place to live. To sublet a decent place you have to be willing to spend at least $1200 a month unless you are ok to live with other people. Just start checking Craig's List.
Also, some suggested neighborhoods in Brooklyn:
> Williamsburg (not past the Graham Ave stop though)
>Carrol Gardens
> Park Slope
> Ditmas Park/ Kinsington (further away from Flatbush is better)
> Greenpoint
