In the US, not sure about CA, but when you incorp, llc or whatever, That is controlled by the state or province I think in your case. Most states have a searchable database. Like this one:
https://esos.state.nv.us/SOSServ…Once you registered and legal the name is legally yours in that state. Then i guess you could trademark it so other people can't use it. You can't register Ford or Apple or something. Has to be distinguisable from other brands... hope that helps
