    In my opinion if you want to become a web designer, there is no need to go to school/uni. Just buy books, learn dreamweaver and flash and you're done.
    If you want to be a graphic designer then you need to have the design study behind you, the experience of working with other people, basic knowledge of art, typography, drawing, business and professional study. Uni for me was a great opportunity to learn the basics and to have briefs to work on and to collaborate with other students/tutors.
    I started study at 27. Come to the UK, there are plenty of courses, not too expensive that could get you started.
    It's never too late.
