That was probably the best way to handle it.
Most thieves are spineless, so a good "LOUD NOISES LOUD NOISES LOUD NOISES" puts the scare in them a little more, especially with some forceful yet necessary physical contact.
Now if you were at a stop light and some guy tried to steal your car with you in it, the loud noises point of actoin goes out the window ... along with you.
