I think this site is a classic example of a designers portfolio that can only really be appreciated by designers.
I think if you showed that site to design agencies and other designers you would get much respec - it's clean, stylish and quality.
Show it to businessman#24 and he many not be wowed so much. It's a classic example of where clients and non-designers say things like "ahhhh it's a bit dull".
I'm not sure who you're pitching your work to - designers, design agencies or directly to potential clients? If it's the latter then you may want to make something more goofy and in your face.
I've hed this problem in the past and I think the best approach is to make 2 sites. One for design agencies to wow over and another for potential clients/businesses to wow over.
