the pickpocket thing is blown out of proporation, I'm sure it happens, but not as much as people claim and probably more to fat old americans.
Of anywhere round the centre you would go to, the dodgiest is El Raval (next to the Ramblas) though its not bad, its just a bit edgier (loads of hookers for example). It also has loads of cool bars though, so you'll want to drink there.
Show no fear, big cities are like dogs, if your not afraid, they wont attack ;)
