I believe that he is a cock, but I did find this research interesting.
I find it hard to believe that you knew before this that when it comes to web pages that people read in an "F" pattern.
For me, what it did was confirm thapeople, when reading online, tend to read more in-depth in the first couple of paragraphs and then scan the rest of the document. Something I've always assumed but never had any real proof of when trying to explain to a client why they shouldn't be so long-winded.
As for your comment about the designers ability to guide the eye using the different elements. True, but you'd be very surprised how many designers are really bad at doing that.
