I don't see why it's so absurd to consider the possibility of a personal spiritual being who has been given freedom (for a season) to generate evil.
Maybe it's hard to swallow because we look at medieval paintings and depictions of a red devil with a pitchfork and assume that people actually believe such silly caricatures.
