I'm beyond late coming into this thread, but does anybody have any real strong feelings about Build's work? I respect Michael he is a strong character and I know people who know him, but when it's all said and done and you leave that out the door, what is the nitty gritty of his work? Does he proclaim the life of print (in the REAL sense of the word) in the digital day? Is it purely formal experiments of typography? Is it layout? Is it ink application? I know it's all of these, but my point is....what is it? Really question what it IS you're seeing. There seems to be a big circus everytime he creates a piece of work, and they are beautiful pieces of design in nearly all cases, but they seem to speak mostly to people within the graphic design community pretty much exclusively. There's nothing wrong with this, but what IS dangerous is the media frenzy that surrounds this work....many students look at this and see it as the pinnacle and the work that makes the difference, when all it does it keep the fun within the design world, never really outside it. Where is the meat and substance to that? Does anyone have a point about that? For me , that's the one thing that pricks away....it's beautifully crafted, but that's all it is....and we seem to see it for more than that? yes/no?
