  There seems to be three kinds of soundtrack to me:

  1) classical score by a single composer
  2) Soundtrack made up of songs by popular bands etc
  3) soundtrack composed by a band or non-classical artist

  me favourites for each category:
  1) most john williams soundtracks, spielberg won't use anyone else.
  2) Easy Rider – The Weight by Smith, Steppenwolf, Hendrix, the Electric Prunes etc.
  or 'Round Midnight
  3) Paris, Texas by Ry Cooder.
