I'd say you can design what you want but make it a collaberative project with an architect because they will bring things to the table that you have no idea about. You can decide the things that you must have that are requirements for you to be happy. They will bring ideas about light, materials etc. that will enhance your ideas.
They will also have an idea how to design a building.
