corin - i think maybe i was trying too hard to make a very simple looking site. my friend doesn't want a lot of clutter or busy-ness, on the other hand i do want the site to be very easy to figure out and navigate. when the database gets populated all the targets will click into a catalogue in that category. so the mystery will be what's behind the targets. the idea of not having lots of text is to force the user to challenge themselves to actually click thru. this isn't a mass audience, it's a rare book site focussing on design, fashion etc., so it's supposed to be fun. but obstacles are obstacles and justification is important. thanks for your input, all good suggestions.
