Well, look up in neighborhoods like Fort Greene. That is a really up-and-coming neighborhood that is relatively cheap NOW, but definitely not in 2 years. Beautiful brownstones on tree-lined blocks.
Park Slope is very nice, but the prices have increased tremendously.
Williamsburg would've been your best bet 4 years ago. Now it's full of yups and post-hipsters and high rents.
Inwood, or near the Columbia area is very nice as well.
These are all areas that suit me, mind you. I like being around tree-lined blocks lacking yups and hipsters.
