  If you are unable to resolve a serious problem with your operating system, it may be necessary to reinstall the operating system. The simplest way to do this is to install the OS on top of itself. Boot from the OS X install CD by placing it in the drive and hold down the C key while the computer starts up. Reinstall the operating system (when you are asked to Select a Destination, make sure not to select the option to Erase destination). This will reinstall the system software while keeping your preferences and configurations in tact."
