Incredible Final. I don't believe that Desmond is dead. When he turns the key the screen fades to white and there is no explosion sound.
I guess desmonds girl looked for him after he disappeard and stumbled over some electromagnetical anomalies in the region where he disappeard. She also said "with enough money and determination you can find anybody".
She'll probably find Michael in the "real" world.
