commercial work is always sexy and popular because we gorge ourselves on appetising design because it satifys our human desire for owning and viewing nice things – generally it makes us feel good.
there are communities within the design sector which celebrate design for the everyday person but it's stuff like designers for health http://www.dihnet.org.uk/ who do great work for even lower budgets and acknowledgment for NHS related projects. There are advisors from the RNIB who do a lot of work which nobody appreciates because they're not blind. I dunno, this fashionable and sexy design or "design for designers" will always be at the opposite end of the spectrum to the more practical, informative and problem solving design.
