Never had much luck with the iPod on the PC. My housemate just bought a Nano and the installer wouldn't install on his pc. When he called apple they told him that even though they had developed software for windows, they would not support it because it was windows. They just gave him urls to certain locations on their web page.
So anyways, just upload the music you want from work some where and download them at home on your mac.
