    Hey Ernie -
First off, you'll definitely need a demo reel - quality of work is on the screen for broadcast. For student work I like to see practical things like endtags and menus, etc. the boring stuff that's the bread and butter of the business. Personal art work is awesome, it just doesn't work too well when you have a list of 100 deliverables due in a week. Video meditations about your girlfriend usually don't cut it. Just being honest and realistic. Think practical, especially when submitting a reel. hope that helps.

A designer who can animate their own work is GOLD around here. Portfolio's are a good supplement, but we usually just watch the reel.
