it's tough. if you know a photographer with this stuff you can ask him and try.
i know a bunch of fulltime photographers that i often help fixing theirn macs and stuff, and in exchange i get to borrow equipment and use their scanners.
i have found out it can be a tedious job, but on the other hand having them scanned is not always a blessing either. sometimes they crop them badly, other times scans lose details in the tonal extremes.
it's a matter of trial and error and find out what you prefer more, outsourcing or diy.
