think the sinisterness is cos of ALL the black. maybe if the page was black but the background was another colour - pink/dark pink
i.e thinking "romantic colours rather than 'im gonna jump you in the darkness' "i hear what you are saying about other dating sites being expensive and with a fee each month too - but surely you are not just competing against these sites - you are competing against the likes of myspace, faceparty, hi5 etc etc too?
some of these sites offer both a free membership and a paid for membership that offers extra privilidges.
