I'm a big dork and admittedly I get giggly whenever comic adaptations come out, but there is an obvious line between brilliant and entertaining (despite faithfulness to the original source)

Entertaining - Hulk, Punisher (1989 NOT 2004), Tank Girl, Spider-Man, Blade

Brilliant - Ghost World, A History of Violence, Sin City

Somewhere in between - Batman Begins , V for Vendetta, X-Men

You also have to consider that alot of these 'big blockbusters' that are coming out are adaptations of golden and silver age material, where morals and hero/villain archetypes are easily defined. Just because this is the case doesn't mean they should be so easily dismissed as bad storytelling.
