    Immigration crackdown includes Chicago

Immigration authorities arrested Chicago employees of a manufacturer of crates and pallets as part of a nationwide crackdown on the hiring of illegal immigrants, officials said Wednesday.

Authorities raided facilities of IFCO Systems in at least nine states in the culmination of a yearlong criminal investigation, law enforcement officials said.

Gail Montenegro, spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's office in Chicago, confirmed the local arrests but said she could not provide further details because the investigation is ongoing.

Labor advocacy groups in Chicago reported about 30 arrests at IFCO's McKinley Park facility, but Montenegro said she could not comment on that claim. She expected to release further details on Thursday.

The crackdown appears to be one of the largest by federal authorities since Wal-Mart agreed to pay $11 million last year to settle allegations concerning the employment and mistreatment of illegal immigrants....
